11 Day Namibia Highlights Tour

This package includes 1 night in Namibia's German influenced capital, Windhoek, followed by an 10 day tour taking in the famous red sand dunes of Sossusvlei, then along the Skeleton Coast from Swakopmund to the wondrous desert wilderness of Damaraland and into Etosha National Park, one of Africa's leading Wildlife reserves. This tour provides you will the very best of this fascinating country.

Despite being Namibia's number one tourist attraction, Sossusvlei still manages to feel isolated. The dunes, which reach as high as 325m are part of one of the oldest and driest ecosystems on earth, and are forever changing with the wind altering the shape of the dunes and colours shifting with the changing light.

The Skeleton Coast is a seemingly endless stretch of foggy isolated beaches strewn with shipwrecks and flanked by wandering sand dunes. The tour will travel through this desert coastline on its way to Damaraland and the Kaokoveld.

Damaraland is named after the people that make up much of its population and its wide open spaces are home to many desert adapted species, including giraffes, zebras, lions, elephants and rhino's. The region is also rich in both natural and cultural attractions. The Kaokoveld is one of the last great wildernesses in southern Africa as well as home to the oft-photographed Himba people.

Etosha National Park is one of the premier wildlife venues in Africa taking in more than 20,000 sq km and surrounding its namesake, the vast white & greenish coloured Etosha Pan. The vast park protects 114 mammal species, 340 bird species and 16 reptiles and amphibians.

Enjoy this unique desert scenery with some of the highest dunes in the world. The dynamic and star-shaped dunes are ideal for the keen photographer and you have the opportunity to climb one of the over 300 m high dunes leaving you overwhelmed with the view. A full breakfast is served under shady camelthorn trees before visiting the Sesriem Canyon and returning to the Lodge for lunch. In the afternoon you can relax by the pool before a late afternoon transfer to the "marble mountain" where you will enjoy a drink watching a spectacular sunset and the star lit clear skies of the desert before returning to the lodge for dinner.

On the drive you will see "Welwitschia mirabilis", a plant said to grow older than 1,000 years and you will travel through the region known as Moon Landscape before arriving in Namibia's most popular holiday destination, Swakopmund. With its seaside promenades, half-timbered homes and colonial era buildings, it seems that only the wind-blown sand and palm trees distinguish Swakopmund from holiday towns along Germany's North Sea & Baltic coasts.

Day 5
Today is a free day to explore the lovely seaside town of Swakopmund.

Day 6
We will depart early morning on the salt road towards Henties Bay, past the many pans and array of spectacular birdlife. We will then visit Twyfelfontein, one of the most extensive galleries of rock art in Africa for a guided tour and then to organ pipes one of the region's best natural attractions. You will again enjoy a packed lunch as we continue our travels into Damaraland arriving at our remote lodge late afternoon.

Day 7
This morning you will depart from the lodge on a scenic drive down to the Klip River Valley where permanent springs provide water for the local population of zebras, antelopes and occasionally elephants and black rhinos. Springboks, kudu and oryx are a permanent fixture and even the nervous and shy klipspringers are sometimes seen leaping about on the steep cliffs of the mountain as if they were flying. You will return to the lodge for lunch and after lunch have the option of spending the afternoon at leisure or joining a guided walk where you will be introduced to the rich flora and fauna of the region.

Day 8
After breakfast we will depart the lodge and travel north to the Kaokoveld visiting a Himba village to learn more about the culture and tradition of this half-nomadic people. We will then continue through this beautiful wilderness area, stopping to see dinosaur spoors as we travel eastward to Etosha National Park, where you will undertake the first guided game drive in this wildlife rich region of Africa. Just before sunset you will travel to the lovely private lodge on the outskirts of the National Park.

Day 9
Today is a full day of guided game viewing in Etosha National Park. In this dry landscape, Etosha's animals are dependent on the park's waterholes and natural springs and you will explore the various waterholes along this enormous salt pan, which is called the "great white place of water" in the local language.

Day 10
Another day of exploring the park and encountering the enormous variety of wildlife that exists in this region. There are 114 mammal species found in the park, with several being rare and endangered such as the black rhino and the black faced impala.
