16 Day South Africa Grand Adventure Tour

This 16 day escorted tour takes you through the very best South Africa has to offer.

You will depart the highveld from Johannesburg and travel through some spectacular countryside to the lowveld and one of the most famous wildlife reserves on the planet, Kruger National Park.  Here you will have the opportunity to experience true luxury in a private lodge in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve with open vehicle game drives with experienced rangers.

The tour then takes you south through Swaziland and into the province of Kwazulu Natal, home to the once feared Zulu warriors. You will visit a traditional Zulu village and also enjoy open vehicle game drives in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park. You will then travel to Durban which with its long white sand beachfront, stylish cafes, lively nightlife, good shopping and cultural attractions is the summer holiday capital of South Africa and a very pleasant place to spend a few days.

From Durban you will take the short flight to the "friendly city" of Port Elizabeth from where you will begin the journey to Cape Town along the picturesque garden route, spending a night in the beautiful winery district of Stellenbosch. Your tour will finish with 3 nights Cape Town, considered by many to be one of the cities of the world. Here you will be taken on guided tours of the city and Table Mountain as well as to Cape Point and also visit Robben Island, the prison home to Nelson Mandela for more than 2 decades.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Johannesburg 
On Arrival at Johannesburg International Airport you will be met by your Wild Africa Travel representative and transferred to your hotel where the remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 2 - Johannesburg to Mpumalanga
After breakfast you will be collected and will travel through some of the most spectacular scenery South Africa has to offer as you move from the Highveld of Gauteng Province to the Lowveld regions of Mpumalanga Province. You will enjoy the panorama route taking in attractions such as Blyde River Canyon and God's Window before arriving at your hotel on the edge of Kruger National Park.

Day 3 - Sabi Sabi Game Reserve
This morning you will be transferred into Sabi Sabi Game Reserve which is a world class reserve on the banks of the Sabi River adjacent to Kruger National Park. There are no fences between Kruger National Park and Sabi Sabi Game Reserve allowing the animals to roam freely between the two. Lunch is provided in the reserve followed by an afternoon game drive in open 4 x 4 vehicles with experienced rangers. At the completion of the drive you will be taken to your private lodge for your nights stay that also includes dinner under the stars in a bush boma.

Day 4 - Mpumalanga
You will be woken before sunrise for an early morning game drive in open 4 x 4 vehicles with experienced rangers which will be followed by breakfast. After breakfast you will check out of your lodge and travel to the south of Kruger National Park. You may wish to embark on a late afternoon or evening game drive in Kruger National Park which will be on your own account or relax in the comfortable surrounds of your hotel.

Day 5 - Mpumalanga to Swaziland
After breakfast you will travel to the Kingdom of Swaziland, one of the three remaining monarchs in Africa which amazingly withstood advances from the Boers, British and Zulu's.

Day 6 - Swaziland to Zululand
After breakfast you will depart Swaziland and re-enter South Africa and the province of Kwazulu-Natal and travel to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park for an afternoon game drive in open 4 x 4 vehicles with experienced rangers. At the completion of the game drive you will be transferred to your hotel located close by.

Day 7 - Zululand to Durban
This morning after breakfast you will be taken to a traditional Zulu village for lunch and a cultural show presented by the local village people. You will then travel south to the seaside city of Durban.

Day 8 - Durban to Port Elizabeth
This morning you will be transferred to Durban airport for your short flight to Port Elizabeth. On arrival in Port Elizabeth you will be transferred to your hotel where you have the afternoon at your leisure.

Day 9 - Port Elizabeth to Knysna
After breakfast you will depart Port Elizabeth on your journey along the picturesque garden route that runs between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. The tour will stop in Tsitsikamma National Park which lies at the foot of the Tsitsikamma Range and is cut by rivers that have carved ravines into the ancient forest. The flora varies from huge stinkwood and yellowwood trees to ferns, lilies and proteas making it a spectacular area to walk through. You will then travel onto the beautiful township of Kynsna.

Day 10 - Knysna
Located on the edge of a serene lagoon and surrounded by forests, Knysna is the perfect placed to spend two nights to take in the beauty of this region. This morning after a leisurely start you will embark on a lagoon cruise to Featherbed Nature Reserve where you will be taken in 4x4's through the reserve for lunch and leisurely walks through forest. After lunch you will cruise back through the lagoon and have the afternoon at leisure.

Day 11 - Knysna to Oudtshoorn
This morning after breakfast we will travel to Oudtshoorn and you will be taken for a tour of the limestone Cango Caves. Named after the Khoesaan word for ‘a wet place' the Cango Caves are located 30km's from Oudtshoorn and are one of the major tourist attractions of the region. From the caves we will travel to one of the large ostrich farms in the area where you will be taken on a guided tour.

Day 12 - Oudtshoorn to Stellenbosch
You will travel on Route 62 from Odtshoorn to the beautiful winery district of Stellenbosch via the Little Karoo and onto the picturesque town of Montagu with its art deco architecture and fine national monuments.

Day 13 - Stellenbosch to Cape Town
This morning after breakfast you have the chance to visit some of the famous wineries in the area for wine tasting before travelling onwards to one of the true cities of the world, Cape Town.

Day 14 - Cape Town
This morning you will be collected from your hotel and taken on a half day guided tour of Table Mountain and Cape Town. You will take the cable car to the top of the mountain for a breathtaking view of the city and its surrounding coastline. Your tour will then take you to the Malay Quarter, city centre, company gardens, Castle of Good Hope and the Diamond works. After lunch you will be collected and taken on a guided tour along the beautiful Western Cape coastal road to Cape Point. At the end of your tour you will be dropped back to your hotel.

Day 15 - Cape Town
This morning you will make your way to the V&A Waterfront for your ferry ride to Robben Island. On arrival at Robben Island you will be taken on a 45 minute guided coach tour of the island before entering the former maximum security prison for a tour with an ex political prisoner. On completion of this tour you will board your return ferry back to Cape Town.

Day 16 - Cape Town
This morning you will be transferred to Cape Town International Airport for your departure.

Other recommendations

This tour gives you a great overview of South Africa as it takes in many of its major attractions. If you are looking for more game viewing and lodge activity an extension back into Kruger National Park or into Pilanesberg National Park for some concentrated game activity would be a good option. You may want to travel further north into Botswana, Zambia or Namibia to experience other regions of southern Africa. Or you may wish to relax on a beach in Mozambique before heading home.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is highly recommended on the 16 Day Grand Adventure Tour to cover for irrecoverable prepaid travel costs incurred as a result of unforeseen circumstances. For example, if the passenger becomes unexpectedly ill and is unable to travel then the passenger will be able to recover the total costs of their 16 Day Grand Adventure Tour package.

Please note every year Wild Africa Travel Company have passengers needing to cancel for many unforeseen reasons. Unfortunately Wild Africa Travel Company is helpless if the passenger has not taken out the appropriate travel insurance.

Travel Insurance is also very important for passengers on their travels as there can be situations where things may go wrong and travellers find themselves needing urgent medical assistance, help with replacing lost luggage, or assistance in making an urgent trip home. Travel insurance can provide coverage for these unforeseen circumstances and also provide peace of mind for the traveller.
