There has been a marked increase in rhino poaching this year with SANParks announcing that 405 rhinos have been poached throughout South Africa so far this year.

The areas where poaching has been highest have been the Kruger National Park (229 incidents), Limpopo (66) and KwaZulu Natal (31).

The figures show the extent of the problem with the number of rhinos poached up by 21.6% from 333 last year, against an increase of 173% and 47% for 2010 and 2009 respectively.

The number of arrests has also increased from the previous year by 27.3% to 210, from 165 in 2010.
