Guests staying at either Bomani or Camelthorn Lodge can choose to travel to their accommodation in style aboard the Elephant Express, a restored rail car. After travelling by road to Dete Railway Station, passengers board the train for the 70km trip to Ngamo Siding where they will be met by safari vehicles to take them the remaining 15 minutes to the lodge.

While on board guests will have the unique opportunity to view game from the open sided rail car with the aid of an experienced guide. Game such as elephant, wildebeest and kudu (to name a few) and a vast variety of bird life can be seen during the 2-hour journey.

The refurbished 22 passenger train features individual coach seats, teak tables, a chemical bathroom for convenience, plenty of room for luggage and wide isles perfect for game viewing. The drivers are experienced engineers who are very familiar with the rail line. Throughout the journey the driver will be in contact with traffic controllers and stopping approximately every 10kms to let other trains pass at junctions.

The Elephant Express is a truly memorable experience and is recommended as a transport option for at least one leg of your transfer. Travelling by train to your accommodation is a great way to start your safari holiday.
