Day 5 & 6: Ngorongoro Crater
Another chance to explore on foot, this time soaking up the history and atmosphere of the Olduvai Gorge, the Cradle of Mankind. One of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world, it has proven invaluable in furthering understanding of early human evolution. This walking tour will extend to the Shifting Sand Dunes, formed by volcanic ash; the Ol Karien Gorge where Ruppel’s Griffon Vultures can be seen soaring high above; and Nasera Rock, a monolith that provides climbers with magnificent views of the plains nearby. Here you can enjoy your picnic lunch. In the late afternoon continue with your driver to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater overnight.

On the morning of day six, you will drive for a short distance to Empakaai Crater, where you will be treated to splendid views and hopefully a glimpse of Ol Doinyo L’Engai, Tanzania’s only active volcano. You will descent into the Empakaai Crater, taking approximately 30 minutes. There is superb birding around the lake and buffalo, hyena and elephant can be spotted. After 2 to 3 hours of walking in Empakaai, jump back in the car to head to Olmoti Crater for your final hike of the day. At Olmoti, a Maasai name meaning cooking pot, you will have the chance to see Maasai herders grazing their cattle and soak up views of the beautiful highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The gentle ascent takes you through mountain forest, grassland, and rocky outcrops.

Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater to Tarangire National Park
Today you will journey into the heart of the wondrous Ngorongoro Crater. Spend the full day on the crater floor. Ngorongoro is unique in that almost all the wildlife lives within the crater walls, hence you have the opportunity to find the game easily. Rhino in particular can be seen regularly, as well as prides of lion and other predators like cheetah. Enjoy lunch by the hippo pond and later commence your drive to Tarangire National Park.
Overnight at the Tarangire Safari Lodge or similar – (Breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 8 & 9: Tarangire National Park to Moshi/Arusha

Animals concentrate along the Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply in the area. There is a great diversity of wildlife including lions, leopards, cheetah, and up to six thousand elephants. Day 8 is flexible, and you can choose to either split your day into morning and afternoon game drives with lunch back at camp or a full-day game drive.

Day 9 is your last chance to enjoy the beautiful wildlife of Tanzania. Again, you have a choice of activities. You may choose to have a leisurely breakfast and relax at the camp, having gone out on a late-game drive the previous night. Alternatively, after breakfast, you could head out on foot to get closer to the animals along the famous Tarangire River. Of course, if you really can’t choose, you could do both! After lunch commences your drive back to Moshi/Arusha.
